DUDE. I have wondered the same thing for so long. It kind of got to a point where I couldn't watch anyone run without becoming seriously upset: "HOW IS THIS A GOOD IDEA? DOESN'T IT JUST CAUSE MASSIVE DRAG AND SLOW YOU DOWN?" That, and it's kind of just lazy animation.
