babirusa by EatToast babirusa by EatToast
toy #2 in my endangered and ugly animals project, the babirusa! a kind of pig native to Indonesia, babirusa have an extra set of tusks that never stop growing. time willing, they will grow to almost a full circle. They're used mainly to lock together in combat to turn the opposing pig over, kind of like how stag beetles fight. For their impressive looks, the tusks are actually quite fragile, so fights are rare, and the tusks are more for show than function. Babirusa are mainly endangered due to habitat loss and being hunted for bushmeat.

the sculpture is about 4 1/2 inches tall, and 7 1/2 inches long.

made of sculpey, with detail paint in acrylics.

enjoy!

the project has gone in a bit of a different direction, my advisor wants me to work on deep sea fish toys (which i am TOTALLY fine with, i love them so much). so expect creepy fish in the near future. :)

Deep Sea Fish? Oh how fun!! This babirusa is gorgeous in itself, and the detail and size is staggeringly good!!

Would you ever do commissions for similiar figures?

this is a great species I've never heard of nor seen. They look very impressive.
Such a beautiful sculpture!

Deep sea fish toys sound like fun :D will you work on sea creature only? Or on mammals like these as well? :)

thank you so much! i originally wanted to do all kinds of animals, but i think the focus now is going to be more on deep sea animals. they look more abstract, and are harder to recognize than most mammal or birds. you can look at a babirusa and think, "pig?" it's harder to do with the deep sea animals, and most deep sea animals are small, so i can make them to scale. the weta a made a while back was to scale, the babirusa, isn't. i think if one is to scale, they all should be :)

Finally, one of my fave animals from my country in dA at last :XD:

Did ya know that the tusk that's close to its head will actually pierce it? Ouch

yeah, that's so sad though. :( it happens a lot with animals with horns like that; we had rams at my house whose horns we would always have to cut down to prevent that kind of problem
