A giant weta toy for my advanced studio project. One of many special toys to come of super endangered, fairly unattractive (though I personally love wetas) animals.
Giant wetas are primarily vegetarian crickets that live in New Zealand, that are not quite as big as this sculpture, but will take up most of the room on your hand. They don't have wings, and their main defense against predators is to kick them with their pointy back legs, or hop away. unfortunately, with both competition with and predation from invasive species and habitat loss, these prehistoric giants are critically endangered.
The point of my project was to try to bring about some awareness to critically endangered or functionally extinct animals that aren't cute.
People will always be bending over backwards to make sure pandas never go extinct because pandas are adorable and fluffy. Not that pandas aren't worth saving, but at this point, they're pretty much all inbred and retarded.
So throughout the next few months i'll be making special toys of fairly ugly unpopular critically endangered animals that would otherwise go largely unnoticed by the general population as they slip into extinction.
This is the final sculpture without antennae. sculpey clay, toothpicks and paint
battery not included.
I will post these as they are made. Probably one every week until sometime in march.
